What a horrible semester that was...goo. I got grades that were about what I expected and it was all just too crazy in general for me to ever do another load like that again. So I took an art break for a week or two. Or not. But this last week I've been drawing like crazy. Still got zelda on the brain like crazy. Loved Skyward Sword and even got the japanese concept art book for the zelda franchise. Then sold it away after I got the scans. I'll totally buy it if Nintendo releases it in the US. Jared out.

This semester has been crazy. It's getting to the end and I'm working on my finals aready. Goo. It's gonna be rough. For my flash class I'm doing a Zelda parody which I'll post here sometime after the 12th of december. That is if I ever figure out how to post flash videos. Someone said I should just post to youtube first. It's Zelda's 25th anniversary this year, so I'm pretty stoked about that. So this movie has to be 3 minutes long. Which is forever in animation terms. I'm worried about getting it done but I think it's possible. So the main characters are Link and King Zora, and all the stuff in the third picture are things Link will use. If you're a zelda fan they should be familiar except the marshmellows and worms. I hate Tingle btw. Who doesn't?

So it's thanksgiving. I'm grateful for my family and that we got Kai this year. Grateful for a good job and that it lets me go to school. This semester has been crazy busy for me trying to juggle it all. Not to mention that Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3, Skyrim, and Zelda all came out within a month of each other. I've played two of them and gotta wait till after school for the others. I've been so busy with school that my drawings have been put on the side, here's a little sketch of what I'm animating for my flash class. It's a parody of the scene from Zelda where this fat lard moves aside for ya. It should be pretty funny. Gonna work a ton on it this weekend! Have a happy thanksgiving!

Aenon

Aenon origionally started off as 'the lady of the lake', a girl would take up excalibur and be transformed into the lady of the lake. I had a Michael Turner Fathom comic and was learnin to draw the ladies.

a very pacheco-y lady of the lake. She has control over water and such.

Eventually I made Aenon the character. She could hold onto weapons and transform into a version of the spirit who once held the weapon. This is an egyptian one.

Some aliens that gifted her a new suit that can carry lots of her weapons. Hopefully anyone that sucks at art can see this and have hope that they too will get better!

The shepherd on the left is a redo of one of aenon's very first forms which has little floating energy eggs around it that turn into animals to help her...I don't know why I thought that made sense.

Aenon pulling two spirits out at once has some interesting results and opens her up to limitless possibilities.

Egyptian spirit plus a reptilian spirit of some sort. Backgrounds have always been my thing :)

A Bryan Hitch pose from The Authortiy. Have you checked out 'The Ultimates' volume 1 and 2 yet? You should. Some of the best comic book stories out there.

I love this picture of my Son Kai. It makes me laugh and is super cute. Also it makes me think of the goblins on the left from Labryinth. I couldn't find a pic of the goblin with his mouths like Kai but I know it exists!!!

Impact

Like Troll, Impact started off as a character in a story I was writing for school about a guy who gets in an accident in outer space and gains incredible powers from the crash. Fantastic four anyone? I love the FF so I'm cool with the comparisons/the apparent hack job. Impact can shoot rocks out of his hands. So yeah. Read on.

Drew this at a stake conference. It is very Brett Booth-esque and shows him in his spacesuit shootin some rocks.

Underwater breathing suit. Gotta love the foreshortening abilites I had in 2001.

Worked this up during school at Jr. High. The suit is a fluid suit when in goes on and then hardens or something. To be honest I think I just liked how the shapes looked. The face shows its during my pacheco copying period.

Impact himself eventually becomes rock-like and loses some fingers.

Impacts powers expanded to be a mish-mash of stuff. The covers on his arm are ropes or threads tied around...Not sure how that would work or how you would bend your arms.

Impact turned into a Dragonball z like character eventually. He could still shoot rocks but could now fly with the help of some rock pillars out of his back.

A more modern sketch of impact. The energy globes emit a little bit of electrical energy and his fore-head is shattering like it was glass. Also he has rolled up sleeves (which I love in real life) so that's pretty epic in nature.

TROLL

Troll was made a little later than the rest of these characters. I was writinga story for an english class: basically a reverse tale of the Billy Goats Gruff. The troll was the good guy and he was fighting to get past each of the monstrous goats bridges. When I was assembling a team he was on there mostly for a balance issue and to have a strong dude.

Mantis

Mantis is now one of my favorite characters that has changed the most over time. He started off like many of my characters that was just a power rangers/beetleborgs/masked rider clone. Now he's more like Green Lantern than any other character I can think of out there. Enjoy!

Mantis could put on his armor by using a crystal shown above. He got around by using that little elevator thing shown above covered with grass. It could take him anywhere! Aamazing!
Mid transformation, the crystal would explode and then cover his body with the armor. I really loved this pose. I'm thinkin about doing a new drawing with this pose though i think it only works with spider-man.

This was shortly after I decided he could make his own armor kinda like green lantern. The mist is the extra matter he didn't use for armor creation.
He would make his own guns and blades to fight. Also those wing claw things that don't make sense! Can't win them all...
At some point around here I came up with these floating head plates that act as a battery to help him make cooler stuff. My friend Kory Hubbell at koryhubbell.blogspot.com gives me credit for his armor-floaty love as Mantis had these a lot after this point. I have no idea where I got this idea from. May be original.

This is pretty old but is kinda how his armor looks in my current version. I always liked this drawing even though the anatomy is off. That's probably true for most of my stuff as I can't really afford a model. This character has limitless possibilities and is probably the reason I like him so much now.

Rutus

This is one of those where you wonder why I still use the name 'rutus' to describe a guy with plant powers. Well, I still kinda like it. It reminds me of the horrible, and occasionally funny movie 'gentleman broncos' where the writer tells them just to add things to the end of names to make them MAGICAL names. So there you go. Rutus started out as me in a power ranger-esque armor that had plant manipulating abilities.

The glass plate on the back of the head is like most of my characters back then, the mask pretty power rangersy
He put on armor the same way rhycore did, also he shot a vine whip out of his armor. The whip is heavily influenced by scorpion in Mortal Kombat. Also he can teleport like a power ranger.

my wierdest style again, I took the last drawing and put my new style to it. Pretty interesting view I had of the human body.

Brett Booth style again, I'm pretty sure he modeled his style after the great Jim Lee (most people did in the 90's)

I messed up horribly inking his face so I marked him with a face tattoo or something. A throne made of roots.

a armor made of bark he can make. He kind of became the humor of my team. He ended up becoming a sort of spider-man manifestation in my stuff. Spider-man should be the wise cracking little guy with a lot of spunk. The spider-man movies didn't quite to it for me.

Rutus would collect seeds from alien plants...which wasn't always easy! Huzzah.

A prelude to an alien

This is my first drawing of Rhycore, or Rhinox as he was known then. The name Rhynox was of course a horrible hack from the beast wars cartoon in the early nineties. This was right after my dad convinced me to start keeping my drawings instead of just throwing them away. Thanks dad! It's fun to have this stuff from when I was 10 or so. He is wearing a turtleneck!
The helmet design evolved a bit. A sega game called vectorman 2 really influenced my style at this point. The hero was made of tiny balls (to show off the 3d shading ability of the genesis) and could take on the form of the villians kinda like Nintendo's kirby.

I think my bro Bryan colored this for me. My characters had glass on the back of their helmets for some reason that would sometimes have liquid in them. No idea why.

I, of course, was always the super heroes I was drawing when I was a kid. Usually the kids in school I didn't like were the villians. This is the hero armoring up, I was really influenced by a show I saw on Sci-Fi called "the guyver 2" which had some really cool armor designs. I later found out it was made after an anime and the first movie stared mark hamil. Type in 'guyver water fight' into youtube to see one of my favorite scenes that shows how he transformed pretty close to above.

I later decided he should be an alien. He is wearing a translator/breathing apparatus as he has gills.
Always heavily influenced by power rangers, here is rhycore's zord.

This is a pose from a Klutz book on drawing marvel characters. I loved this pose as a kid as you will notice as I keep posting. I also loved sparkly reflective things. I'm gonna guess I was almost into Jr high at this point.

One of my wierdest style changes. I really didn't want to connect my lines and kind of cartoonized everything. People would comment on it and I would just say it was my style and to leave it alone. I have no idea why my style went this way for a year or so.
In the year 2000.....glad I dated my drawings at some points! Brett Booth drew 'Backlash' around this time for Wildstorm comics. I loved his long and skinny style so my style changed to match. I also changed his name to rhycore thinking it had a rhino feel but a wierd feel as well. I was probably wrong but the name stuck.
This was around the same time. This character seems to be a little more influenced by Carlos Pacheco, one of my favorite 90's artists. Loved his run on the x-men. He still draws one of my favorite Wolverine, marrow, and angel. I changed Rhycore into an energy based character with the energy blades and the 'horn' made of energy.
Lots of different forms came about as he can add parts to his armor ala iron man. This is a warlord armor

Just to compare here is Rhycore's current beginning form. He's kind of an energy vampire of sorts and pretty much the ninja of the group. His weapons pop out of his armor. He's pretty much the earliest of my creations and still one of my favorites.

ADVANTAGE

I haven't been posting much. Mostly because most of what I draw is original stuff that I don't want stolen. But I decided nobodies probably gonna steal it, and if they do I have a lot of evidence against them! So it's no secret to those who know me that I've had a superhero team in the works since I was 12 or so. The characters are pretty close to me and even their ridiculous and childish names find me trying to justify them in the present. Some of them are blatent ripoffs that evolved over time to something less hacky, but most of them were what I was pretending to be when I was a kid. I'll talk a little about their creation and since I have no patent on them I'll probably not reveal too much. My little bro and I are writing a novela about them, we're going for more of a Dark Knight feel rather than a lighter book. So here are some team shots of them from my childhood. Childhood!

This is pretty early on in the process, I must have been in early jr high with this one, channeling a lot of Carlos Pacheco in my work. They also have a lot of 'flare' or 'spunk'. This is pretty funny to look at now. Hopefully you see some progress happened after this. If not you need to scroll down to my older posts of my kindergarten drawings.

This was a few years later and I just wanted to redraw that one. This was probably early high school. The team has since gained a lot of members. This was during my Bryan Hitch stage. For some reason I thought his eyes were really far apart and went extreme with it fitting like 10-30 eyes on the horizontal eye line. If you understand that good for you...At some point I learned how to do persepective. Admittedly this took a while.

A two page spread from Jr high probably. This style was wierd. Probably a mix of me wanting some sharpness and variety in line and Bryan Hitch. I was just getting into the scriptures at that point and really liked the idea of God blessing people to live on earth till the lord end so I even had "the 3 Nephites" in my story. It was a horrible idea, but they totally dropped a mountain on some dudes. So there naysayers! Also shading and color were not really in my arsenal. Still something I'm trying to get good at.

A three page spread you say? Why yes. At this point I was really into dragonball z and still into Bryan Hitch. Man this is bad...but hey, this is the history of my team. I like to take a character and evolve it to the next level. Probably too much pokemon and digimon as a kid. Nah.

I still love pokemon. So I decided to make some pokemon Aceos and sell them on ebay. I'm gonna paint these up lightly and see if they sell. I really like em though so they will be hard to give up ish. I tried to find an actually animal and combine the monsters with them. I still think they need to make a live action movie with puppets that have digital eyes like "where the wild things are"...just putting that out there

Some people wonder why they're messed up all their lives and never know. Luckily for me my parents kept my kindergarten sketchbook, which pretty much cements my attitude for the rest of my life. My parents were actually threatened that I would be taken away if I didn't stop drawing stuff like this. So enjoy a view into my strange mind as a child. My parents said i did it for the reactions I got--I still think I was hilarious.

Life goes on, trying a different approach with the next digital painting. Gonna do some inks over top...cause I like that. just tring different stuff ya know? The painting is of atreyu, who has olive skin as he is a greenskin. Also all their clothes are made from the ten foot tall purple buffalo they hunt so his head stuff is from that. This is a scene where atreyu dreams of the buffalo he was meant to kill to gain his place in the village...then a zebra man came and told him to save the childlike empress...I love neverending story. So for my class we're doing 5 projects and taking it from thumbnails to finished...it's going okay. I'm doing neverending story, the first one is bastion riding grogromman, who changes colors when he leaps on different colors. Here are the thumbnails and stuff. Look for the finished product next!

I'm restarting my blog, took off all my origional stuff, and I'll start adding stuff a little more smartly from now on. I got a lot of ideas and some of them are going into a book my little bro, Chad, and I are writing together that could be great. So I've digitally painted a little, but I just started a painter class and here is my first assignment! We recreated some classic paintings, only spending 2 hours on each. I completely stink at painter, but I wanted to show my progress and this is the beginning. So enjoy my stank as it should stink a little less after this semester and for the rest of my life!
